Developing New Technologies - M Joseph

Mostly   our   students   and   teachers   are   users   of   the technologies   innovated   by   other   countries   rather   than   technology developers and showing great interest in learning new technologies so as to get placed. Technology development has lot of merits such as job creation, revenue and to a greater extent national income will   also   get   improved   apart   from   its   societal implications.        Invention   of   the   Dubbing   Technology   could   only   pave   the   way   for the doyen in Tamil Cinema M.G.R, to act in cinemas as hero, as it helped   him   overcoming   his   inability   to   sing,   in   spite   of   his cinematic   charisma.   Those   were   times   Tamil   actors   should   posses singling   qualities   to   become   hero/protagonists   in   the   music dominated cinemas, due to restrictions of the then available audio recording facilities. On the other hand career of the then super star,   probably   the   first,   M.K.

No more Teachers but Counselors Needed - M Joseph

When my friend was a Professor, in a private Engineering College at Coimbatore, there was one student Mr. L, doing B.E., who had (I suppose) a love affair with a girl studying in the same college. Accidentally, He happened to see him with his girl friend in a very close proximity. He called him and inquired. Though, initially he refused to accept the affair, and finally pleaded sorry. He shouted at him as it was the time for his semester exams and asked him to bring his parents to meet him and stood by his decision to make him more concentrated towards studies, in spite of his requests for not informing the matter to his parents.      Later in the evening, when he was driving my car from the hospital, He got a call, informing me that Mr. L, attempted to commit suicide and was rushed to the Hospital. He was heart broken. He rushed to the hospital and came to know that he was out of danger, by God’s grace. It took him around one month to return back to my normalcy after solving al

A Love Poem (Free Verse), you will Laugh - M Joseph

They all make fun of me, while you pass by, treating you as my lover. It makes me feel so happy and I often long for such funs only. We get married on a Friday during the mid of a May, in my village’s church. We walk together with our hands united in the marriage procession, as they play joyously the native music before us. We go for a hillstation for our honey moon. We lay together, as melodies of Raja lull as to sleep. You ask for my forgiveness for your laziness throughout our life. You also talk about our children and the names going to be kept for them. We go for a banquet to a village house, a day after our honey moon. I dream of dancing with you as the Westerners dance in parties. The proud of being my wife glimpses through your eyes. I am fond of such thinkings only as heart pours down the love on you, I also think that You shoud, somehow, come to know about on being loved by me.

Tamil Characters: Personalities, Politics and Culture – Book Review - M Joseph

Generally the history of India ends with the Independence of India. The famous Indian historian  Ramachandra Guha emphasizes the need and importance of writings on the post colonial history of India in one of his interview or article. He specifically  mentions C.N Annadurai. Towards that historian A.R. Venkatachalapathy’s book, Tamil Characters: Personalities, Politics and Culture, published by Pan Macmillan India, 2018, makes a valid attempt to record the history of post colonial Tamil  Nadu, though peripherally.      The Tamil personalities like Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, C.N. Annadurai and the like and other historical events pertinent to Tamils and Tamil Nadu, with due recognition  along with their contribution are well presented in this book. Books on such kind will give deeper insight into the post colonial  history of Tamils and Tamil Nadu to the International community.      I was very much surprised and shocked to see the book which does not have any references and foo

Kanchanai of Pudumai Pithan

Sometime in February 2019, I got a call from my long time friend, a film maker, - a close associate of Arunmmozhi, associate director of the Aval Appadithan, a well known Tamil Cinema which pioneered the birth of modern Tamil cinema, directed by Ruthrayaiah - Nandhi Chella Durai, informing to work as an associate director of his proposed short film Kanchanai, an eponymous title, based on the short story ( Kanchanai ) written by legendary Tamil Writer Pudumai Pithan. It surprised me a lot - as I have not even attempted any film making venture except being a cinephile, who attempted some research work in Tamil Cinema - for his assessment on me to carry out the task of associating him in film making. Before going into  the shoot, we, along with Saravanan - the cameraman from Bollywood, a native of our place Thanjavur, came for a vacation - made story discussions. Though the director already made the script, scenes, dialogues, set properties, etc, as he was a professional sometime ago

Analysis of middle class families in K.Balachander’s Cinemas under Reading the History in Cinemas

Image
This article presents about how the cinemas can be considered as historical sources with examples from Tamil Cinema. This study is not about history of Tamil Cinema. It’s about studying the history embedded into the content and narration presented in a Cinema. The period, which the cinema depicts, can be assessed by some images shown in that cinema. Examples: the wall poster, Name board in the market places, Dresses worn by the characters and the like. This paper, keeping this as the framework, tries to study the representation of middle classes especially Brahmin families in Tamil cinemas, which is the forte of K.Balachander, who contributed more to the Tamil cinema as a director. This also studies the various historical events and their impact through the cinemas of K.Balachander.        The authentication of historical events can be done by comparing the contemporary representations in different movies of the same period and also with the other traditional historical documents

Christ in Tamil Cinemas.

Image
Tamil Cinema industry, one of the leading cinema industries in the world, produced approximately 6500 cinemas, a force influencing Tamil Society, Culture and Politics, produced chief ministers like M.Karunanithi, M.G.R and J. Jeyalalitha, has not yet produced a single cinema on Jesus Christ. Surprisingly, Swamikannu Vincent, one of the earliest exhibitor in Tamil Nadu, screened the first show of the silent movie ‘Life of Jesus Christ’ in 1905, in St.Joseph’s School, Trichy, using the equipment purchased from a French Man called Dupont along with that movie, and started touring the major cities in the then Madras Presidency and India under British rule , to screen the movie. The silent movie, Life of Christ, was not produced by any of the native film producers or film makers from Tamil Cinema world. There were few dubbed versions of the cinemas from Malayalam (Jesus) and Telugu (Karuna Moorthy) on the Life of Jesus. Jesus (1973), a Malayalam movie, was directed by P.A. Thoma

Errors in Tamil Cinemas.

If the Lord Rama opens a stamped envelope with Indian postal stamps and postal marks, from Sita devi, What will you think?. Yes, It happens, in the movie Sita Vanavasam (1934), Lord Rama does it that too in the wilderness. Mistakes and inaccuracies, very commonly present in the Cinemas, not been given much attention by the film makers and critics/ reviewers, is a point of concern to be stressed upon, so as to make a better presentation in cinemas. In Kovalan (1933), a Tamil film set in between third to fifth century, based on a character from the Tamil epic Silappathikarm by Ilangavadigal, one character appears with spectacles in few scenes. In Madurai Veeran (1952), based on a story on a popular folk deity, set in seventeenth century, had one scene, in which “guillotine” makes an appearance. In the dubbed in Tamil, Malayalam cinema Jesus (1973), there were four dances like modern day cabaret dances, in the palaces of Herod the great, since then the trend in the south Indian films

Cinema in Those Times

Recently I went to a Cinema hall in Thanjavur, to watch a cinema, a recent release, after reading the good online reviews. I got the tickets too. It was almost time for screening and an attendant came and told me, Sir, Please go and collect the money at the ticket counter as there is no show today. I got shocked as my eagerness of watching a thriller got shattered, asked him, why so? Since the tickets sold are less than twenty in numbers, we cannot screen the movie. When will you screen this again? Not sure, Sir , he replied. I collected back the money and threw away my dream of watching that movie, as there is no certainty of being screened in the near future. I was really surprised seeing the milieu pertinent to watching cinemas in the cinema halls in this social media era, in Tamil Nadu. We have reached, from a battle ground like scenario in front of the cinema halls, to a situation that there is no surety of watching even after getting tickets. The reasons could be attribut
